Time flies as here and now, we will talk about the 40th of Easter since we just celebrated easter 2022 last 17 April, and since the resurrection of Jesus Christ into heaven. On the 39 days after Easter Sunday is the Ascension Day of Jesus Christ which always falls on Thursday, therefore, it is often called “Holy Thursday”. However, it could be different between the Eastern Orthodox churches and the western churches. The Eastern Orthodox usually calculate it with the Julian calendar, while many western churches use the Gregorian calendar.

Cited to timeanddate.com, the date for this one of the earliest Christian festivals depends on the phases of the Moon in a particular year and it occurs ten days before Pentecost. The New Testament Bible, also said that Jesus Christ met several times with his disciples during the 40 days after his resurrection to instruct them on how to carry out his teachings. It is believed that on the 40th day he took them to the Mount of Olives, where they watched as he ascended to heaven.

The Christian people believe that this is the day for Jesus Christ’s ascension into heaven, and the Ascension Day of Jesus Christ has been marked since the year 68 to end the Easter season. The celebration has different traditions by Christians in different countries. Countries with a Christian population usually set Ascension Day as a public holiday and it becomes special services at churches throughout the country, where many businesses, schools, banks, and government offices are closed.

According to timeanddate.com, churches in the United States usually celebrate it on the following Sunday. While in Germany, Ascension Day is sometimes called Father’s Day as many Protestant men have herrenpartien “outings” on this day. In England, Ascension Day is associated with various water festivals ranging from Well Dressing in Derbyshire to the Planting of the “Penny Hedge” at Whitby, a small town in Yorkshire. British society also believes that eggs laid on Ascension Day are said to never go bad and will guarantee good luck for a household if placed on the roof. In Sweden, there are jaunts called gökotta, or “early cuckoo morning” where many people go out to the woods early in the morning (at 3 am or 4 am) to hear the birds singing at sunrise and it is good luck if cuckoo is heard from the east or west. In Devon, it was an ancient belief that the clouds always formed into the familiar Christian image of a lamb on Ascension Day, and people there believe that if the weather is sunny on Ascension Day, the summer will be long and hot, but if it rains on the day, crops will do badly and livestock will suffer from the disease. According to Welsh superstition, it is unlucky to do any work on Ascension Day. Then in Portugal, Ascension Day is associated with wishes for peace and prosperity. Traditionally, in rural communities of Portugal, people make bouquets from olive branches and sheaves of wheat with poppies and daisies, because the olive and wheat are symbolic of abundant harvest and the poppy stands for peace and the daisy for money. With that being said, wheat is kept in the house throughout the coming year as a symbol of prosperity.
