Exactly 15 years ago the world has committed to dedicating the May 25 as World Thyroid Day through the Thyroid Federation International to realize how important thyroid disorders are to health. May 25 is the founding date of the European Thyroid Association (ETA), the first organization who commemorate World Thyroid Day.
Since then, World Thyroid Day has become a momentum to raise awareness about thyroid for our health, so that more people can become more aware to recognize and detect early symptoms of thyroid disorders, understanding the prevention, and the treatment. Also since then, other organizations around the world support the World Thyroid Day to be celebrated every year.
The thyroid is a small gland located in the neck of humans and butterfly-shaped. It is one of the largest endocrine glands in the human body that produces the hormones triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) which can affect critical body functions and regulate metabolism. Many know that thyroid gland dysfunction is a toxic goiter.
There are several types of thyroid disorders that can happen to any age, one of the most common type is hypothyroidism, an abnormal decrease in thyroid activity. There is also hyperthyroidism, an abnormally increased thyroid activity, a type of thyroiditis, an inflammation of the thyroid gland, and thyroid cancer which is often caused by an iodine deficiency.
Citing News18.com, Public Health Update estimates that there are more than 200 million people in the world with thyroid disorders and 50 percent of them are undiagnosed. In Indonesia, thyroid is one of the health problems that need attention.
Based on statistical data from the Indonesian Thyroid warrior community called Pita Costa, there are 545 hypoerthyroid sufferers and 250 hyperthyroid sufferers, where the number of thyroid increases every year. Therefore, knowledge and awareness about thyroid is very important.
In Indonesia, Pita Costa was established on October 26, 2014 to become a support group as a forum for discussion to share passion, sorrow, and hope to live physically and psychologically healthy.
