The plant that converts thoughts into dreams, tobacco is marked for its evasion by the global community every 31st May. Since 1987, World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) has become a day to be celebrated annually to raise awareness of the harm caused by tobacco products.
Cited to the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), World No Tobacco Day aims to draw attention to the business practices of tobacco companies to capture generations of consumers and their interference in policy decisions that undermines effective tobacco control. The effects of tobacco happen not only on the people, communities, or public health but also on the environment.
In terms of health, UICC said that consuming tobacco can inflict at least 20 cancer types and is the leading preventable cause of cancer by a wide margin. The data from UICC also shows that tobacco products cause some 2.4 million deaths globally every year, almost a quarter of all deaths or there are 10 million of deaths due to cancer.
Cited from who.int, there are 600,000,000 trees chopped down to make cigarettes, 84,000,000 tonnes of CO2 Emissions released into the air raising global temperatures, 22,000,000,000 liters of water used to make cigarettes, and this plant kills over 8 million people every year. Its impact to destroys the environment will further be harming human health, through the cultivation, production, distribution, consumption, and post-consumer waste.
Therefore, UICC set the theme “Protect the environment” for this year’s World No Tobacco Day to highlight that, throughout its lifecycle, tobacco pollutes the planet and damages the health of all people, and this year focuses on the impact of tobacco on the environment and aims to expose efforts by tobacco companies to “greenwash” their reputation by marketing themselves as environmentally friendly.
