Have you ever had malaria? Did you know that this disease is preventable? Malaria is an infectious disease transmitted by an infective female Anopheles mosquito which spread the Plasmodium parasite. However, to tackle this disease, we all have an opportunity, especially every 25 April, we can collectively keep malaria on the global health agenda by voicing it out.
Due to its danger, 25 April was marked as World Malaria Day in 2007 by the WHO Member States during the 2007 World Health Assembly. This is one of eleven official global public health campaigns by the World Health Organization (WHO). You must be often heard about the other ten campaigns, such as World Health Day, World Blood Donor Day, World Immunization Week, World Antimicrobial Awareness Week, World Patient Safety Day, World Tuberculosis Day, World Chagas Disease Day, World No Tobacco Day, World Hepatitis Day and World AIDS Day.
On World Malaria Day 2022, the global community will commemorate it with the theme “Harness innovation to reduce the malaria disease burden and save lives.” According to WHO, there is no single tool that is available today that will solve the problem of malaria, therefore WHO is calling for investments and innovation that bring new vector control approaches, diagnostics, antimalarial medicines, and other tools to speed the pace of progress against malaria.
Quoted to WHO, there were an estimated 241 million new cases of malaria and 627 000 malaria-related deaths in 85 countries and, endmalaria.org said that this disease kills more than 400’000 people each year which more than two-thirds of deaths were among children under the age of 5 living in the WHO African Region, most of them in sub-Saharan Africa. Endmalaria.org even said that malaria is the leading cause of death for children under five there. From this, we can see how emergency is malaria.
