There are six official languages of the United Nations (UN), such as Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish. A UN delegate may speak in any official UN language. As we always talk about the important global issues with the UN, clear and concise communications through the languages are all equally need the correct interpretation and translation.

To promote and celebrate multilingualism and cultural diversity as well as the equality of all official languages used in the organization and its agencies, United Nations (UN) designates World Language Day.

On 18 December 1973, United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted Arabic as the sixth official language of the organization, and the World Arabic Language Day was declared in 2012.

As one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, the Arabic language is a pillar of the cultural diversity of humanity, used daily by more than 400 million people in the world.

Quoted from unesco.org, World Arabic Language Day in 2021’s theme is the Arabic Language, a bridge between civilizations. This is a call to reaffirm the important role of the Arabic language in connecting people through culture, science, literature, and many more domains. It highlights the historic role of Arabic in creating and transmitting knowledge, and enhancing dialogue, and building peace. It also recognizes the changing world and the imperative to reinforce the dialogue between nations and peoples. In increasingly globalized, digitalized, and multilingual societies, this is particularly relevant.

As UNESCO is the lead UN Agency, the celebration of World Arabic Language Day resonates with the International Decade for the Rapprochement of Cultures (2013-2022).

UNESCO organized a virtual panel discussion on 17 December, from 11 am to 1 pm (GMT+1) by inviting experts, academics, journalists, and representatives of specialized institutions will gather to debate about the historic role of Arabic in creating and transmitting knowledge, and about the Arabic language as a tool to enhance dialogue and build peace.

According to unesco.org, the Arabic language has given rise to a fascinating aesthetic, in fields as varied as architecture, poetry, philosophy, and song with the diversity of its forms, classic or dialectal, from oral expression to poetic calligraphy. It gives access to an incredible variety of identities and beliefs and its history reveals the richness of its links with other languages. Arabic has played a catalytic role in knowledge, promoting the dissemination of Greek and Roman sciences and philosophies to Renaissance Europe. It has enabled a dialogue of cultures along the silk roads, from the coast of India to the Horn of Africa.

Let’s mark another World Language Day of Chinese on 12 November, English on 23 April, French on 20 March, Russian on 6 June, and Spanish on 12 October to celebrate. Quoted from un.org, multilingualism ensures the participation increment of all Member States in the Organization’s work by promoting tolerance, as well as greater effectiveness, better outcomes, and more involvement. Using the Twibbonize frame for your photo and sharing it through various digital platforms you are active on might be a small step to start joining in the celebration of this World Language Day.
