A day to stop drug abuse is here on 26 June 2022. The day has been declared since the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) released resolution 42/112 of 7 December 1987. Cited un.org, the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is set to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse.
Every year, the global community commemorates this day by raising awareness of the major problem that illicit drugs pose to society with a different theme. In 2022, the theme is “Addressing drug challenges in health and humanitarian crises” as UNODC (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime) addresses existing and emerging transnational drug challenges stemming from situations of crisis. The situations are those which increased suffering and bring the world to the brink of global recession, such as pandemics, climate crises, food crises, energy crises, and supply chain disruptions.
Cited un.org, UNODC targeted the most vulnerable, including children and youth, people using drugs, people with drug use disorders, and people who need access to controlled medicines by continuing to advocate to protect their right to health. For this occasion, governments, international organizations, civil society, and all stakeholders are expected to act and get involved in strengthening drug use prevention and treatment as well as tackling illicit drug supply.
