Days before the Easter Vigil, Christians around the world will go through the Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday in this holy week as part of the Paschal Triduum. If the day of Easter is to commemorate the resurrection of Jesus from the dead, the day to commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus and his death at Calvary is on Good Friday.
Quoted from Wikipedia, some people may think wrong about the etymology of “Good Friday” as a corruption of “God Friday”, however, ‘Good Friday’ comes from the obsolete sense of ‘pious, holy’ of the word “good”.
This day is observed with of course church services and also fasting. It’s a strict fast by the way, as the adult Byzantine Christians are expected to abstain from all food and drink for the entire day to the extent that their health permits. However, the tradition of Good Friday is vary for every country that adheres to Christianity in the world.
This day is also same as the Easter Day in terms of setting the date, so Good Friday falls on a different date every year in both the Gregorian and Julian calendars. While Easter falls on the first Sunday based on the Paschal Full Moon on or after 21 March, taken to be the date of the vernal equinox, the remark for Good Friday is that it’s the Friday before Easter. Good Friday is a widely instituted legal holiday around the world, including in most Western countries, 12 U.S. states, Indonesia, and others.
