Now is the time for us to remember the meaning of health in our lives. What’s the point of living if we are unhealthy? Don’t you agree? On May 12, the international community celebrates the contribution of nurses to society. It is called International Nurses’ Day (IND). This date is set according to the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth, she is the founder of modern nursing.
Nightingale was born in 1820, She became an important figure in nursing during the Crimean War in 1850 by leading a group of nurses to treat British soldiers. During her work, she was desperate because the facilities were not adequate. This experience made Nightingale campaign for reform in the fields of health care and nursing. Nightingale then established a Nightingale School of Nursing in St. Thomas’ Hospital in London. The success of this school led to the establishment of other nursing schools, and the modern nursing profession began to be widely recognized.
IND has been celebrated every year since 1965 by the International Council of Nurses (ICN), and ICN has always led the celebration of IND until now. To commemorate International Nurses’ Day, ICN set different themes every year, and the theme for the 2022 IND is ”Nurses: A Voice to Lead – Invest in Nursing and respect rights to secure global health”. ICN said this day focuses on the need to invest in nursing and respect the rights of nurses in order to build resilient, high-quality health systems to meet the needs of individuals and communities now and into the future.
