Since 1993, Jai Ram Thakur fought for his first election from the Chachiot assembly constituency. At that time, he was 26 years of age. Starting in 1998, Jai Ram Thakur continuously wins 5th times MLA in consecutive terms from Chachiot which after delimitation is known as Seraj assembly constituency or Himachal Pradesh Assembly. He was served as a Cabinet Minister in the BJP Government of Himachal Pradesh, and from 2009 to 2012 he served as the Minister of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj.

Thakur attained his primary education from Kurani School, then he went to High School Bagsyad near Thunag. After that, Thakur started his college life in Vallabh Government Degree College Mandi and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts. He also did Post-Graduation (M.A.) from Panjab University, Chandigarh.

During his college and University day, Thakur was a member of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), an independent social organization with a focus on education that started as a Non-Government Organization (NGO) and became a right-wing for all Indian students affiliated to the Hindu nationalist Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) which is also a social organization dedicated to India’s resurgence and global peace.

Thakur was born in 1965 to a poor farming family in Tandi village of Mandi’s Thunag area at Murahag panchayat of Seraj assembly constituency as the fourth among five siblings who are two sisters and three brothers whereas Thakur is the youngest son.
