There are one billion people with disabilities. One central focus on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals is persons with disabilities as they are less likely to access health care, education, employment and to participate in the community, even in a normal circumstance. Disabled persons are one of the most excluded groups in our society. After all, in 1992, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) resolution 47/3. The theme of this year’s observance is the Leadership and participation of persons with disabilities toward an inclusive, accessible, and sustainable post-COVID-19 world.

Quoted from un.org, more than one billion people, or approximately 15 percent of the world’s population, live with some form of disability and 80 percent live in developing countries. To commemorate IDPD 2021, United Nations will hold three Events on 3 December 2021 to celebrate the IDPD, such as;

  • Shaping an Inclusive Future for All: Leading with Determination, this to explore the opportunities and challenges to shape an inclusive future for persons with disabilities, showcase how to speed the efforts to meet Sustainable Development Goals, and explore key issues to improve the lives of people with disabilities.
  • Reducing Inequalities Through Technologies: A Perspective on Disability Inclusive Development, a virtual event co-organized by United Nations Department for Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA), the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), from 8:00 to 9:30 am (NY time).
  • Leadership of the new generations: Children and adolescents with disabilities and their voices post COVID-19, a virtual event organized by the Office of the Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General on Disability and Accessibility, Professor Maria Soledad Cisternas Reyes, United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) and co-sponsored by the Permanent Mission of Chile to the United Nations.

Those events are not the only event you can participate in, there are some more events arranged for you to support as well. UN agencies, civil society organizations, academic institutions, and the private sector are encouraged to support, and Twibbonize frame is one thing you can support.
