May is near, it means the May Day or Labour Day is coming. It’s a day when the international labor movement is carried out by trade unions around the world to celebrate the economic and social struggles and successes of the workers every May 1st. May Day is observed globally, especially in countries that implement a capitalist economic system.

Some countries even set May Day as a National holiday as this day is an effort to gain economic-political control of industrial rights. In commemorating May Day, the movement of workers’ groups usually breeds resistance. There are several aspects they are usually focusing on, such as work discipline, work incentives in the context of working time, wages, holiday allowances, and leave, as well as the conditions of the workers’ working environment.

How can the day for workers exist today must have gone through a long and tough journey. May Day has certainly gone through a long historical process in the world since the 1800s. In the 19th century, many workers were forced to work for 13 to 20 hours in one day. How the workers got treated has led to the 8-hour work rule that we currently adhere to begins. The movement was started exactly on the 1st of May at that time with rallies, strikes, and large-scale protests that took place in several areas of the Americas and Europe.

Protests continued and were pursued by the workers, until finally in July 1889, the world socialist congress which was held in Paris set May 1st as a Labour Day. Citing Wikipedia, the resolution of the congress also contains demands for governments in all countries and cities to set the working hours for workers to 8 hours per day and implement all the results of the International Labor-Congress of France.

Until now Labor Day has always been a day for workers. In various countries, the workers often take advantage of this day as a moment to demand their rights.
