Did you know that nearly 1 in 3 women aged 15 years and older have been abused in their lifetime? and the impunity, silence, stigma and shame surrounding the victim mostly unreported. According to the latest report from UN Women, 2 in 3 women reported that they or a woman they know experienced some form of violence and Only 1 in 10 women said that victims would go for help.
Since 2008, UN Secretary-General and UN Women has led a campaign of 16 days of activism against Gender-Based Violence to prevent and eliminate violence against women and girls around the world, calling for global action to increase awareness, promote advocacy and create opportunities for discussion on challenges and solutions. The kick off of this campaign is on 25 November to comemmorate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and runs until it will be concluded on 10 December as this date is the comemmoration of Human Rights Day.
This year’s 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence global theme is “Orange the world: End violence against women now!”. The campaign will includes the launch of a new report with updated data on gender violence. According to un.org, gender based violence in general terms manifests in physical, sexual and psychological forms, encompassing intimate partner violence (battering, psychological abuse, marital rape, femicide), sexual violence and harassment (rape, forced sexual acts, unwanted sexual advances, child sexual abuse, forced marriage, street harassment, stalking, cyber- harassment), human trafficking (slavery, sexual exploitation), female genital mutilation, and child marriage.
