55 years ago, on 8 August 1967, the Bangkok Declaration was signed by the Founding Fathers of ASEAN, such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. It was the time that the Association of Southeast Asian Nations or ASEAN was established in Bangkok, Thailand. Therefore, the document is also known as ASEAN Declaration. Cited to asean.org, the aims and purposes of ASEAN are about cooperation in the economic, social, cultural, technical, educational, and other fields, and in the promotion of regional peace and stability through abiding respect for justice and the rule of law and adherence to the principles of the United Nations Charter.
As the Association is open for participation by all States in the Southeast Asian region, there are 10 current members of ASEAN adding to the 5 founding members, such as Brunei Darussalam, Viet Nam, Lao PDR, Myanmar, and Cambodia that also subscribe to the organization’s aims, principles, and purposes. The declaration document also proclaimed ASEAN represents “the collective will of the nations of Southeast Asia to bind themselves together in friendship and cooperation and, through joint efforts and sacrifices, secure for their peoples and for posterity the blessings of peace, freedom, and prosperity.”
The name has been spoken, and ASEAN is about regional cooperation in Southeast Asia. The association age is turning 55 this year and all member states are standing still, facing global challenges today. With that being said, ASEAN is one of the most successful inter-governmental organizations in the developing world today.
