Do you know the woman who is fighting for democracy in Myanmar? She is probably the legendary one, Aung San Suu Kyi. This year, she turns 77 years old. She was born on 19 June 1945 in Rangoon, British Burma, as the daughter of Myanmar’s independence hero, General Aung San, and a prominent Burmese diplomat, Khin Kyi.
Cited to BBC News, between 1989 and 2010, Suu Kyi spent around 15 years in detention, therefore, her struggle to bring democracy to then military-ruled Myanmar made her an international symbol of peaceful resistance in the face of oppression. In 1991, Aung San Suu Kyi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, while still under house arrest, and hailed as “an outstanding example of the power of the powerless” because of her struggle to bring democracy to Myanmar without resorting to violence against the rule of the military regime.
Besides as an activist who fights for democracy, she also cofounded a political party; National League for Democracy in 1988. She then became more widely recognized by the global community as her responses to the Rohingya issue which caused a crisis situation there were criticized by the international community. Her image was suffered internationally
