From Paris to the entire world, International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) take the Amateur radio operators worldwide to the airwaves. The day for this ocassion is called World Amateur Radio Day which is celebrate on every April 18 as the day of IARU was established.

Amateur radio operators are also called HAM radio operators. Quoted from the American Legion website the term “ham” is a pejorative nickname for amateur radio operators was first heard in 1909 by operators in commercial and professional radio communities which was subsequently embraced by the operators and slowly spread to other English-speaking countries.

What are they doing?

According to the IARU’s website, the ham operators are providing demonstrations and discussion about amateur radio throughout the day. The topics include reviews of the operating capabilities of stations, the amateur radio operators interests and role for the community as the communication provider. One more special thing of ham radio quoted from IARU is that they don’t need a cell phone network, or the Internet to communicate during critical conditions such as disaster especially when the regular communication channels pails, because the ham operators will kept their role.

You may also wondering the use of the word “amateur” here. Well, in the law of radio realm, amateurs are prohibited to accept the monetary or material compensation from any activities they do as radio operators. However, the American Legion said on its website that over a century, the ham operators have led the advancement of the radio communications science. Even today, radio, television, satellite communications, cell phones, broadband, digital communications and many other innovations first explored and pioneered by ham radio hobbyists.

From that moment, amateur radio has became more popular than ever, according to IARU, there are more than 3,000,000 licensed operators today. The establishment of IARU itself is to support Amateur Radio worldwide. Quoted from IARU, since the establishment of IARU, the club members has worked tirelessly to defend and expand the frequency allocations for Amateur Radio with enlightened administrations of every organization’s part in the world. With that being said, this day was set when the IARU Member-Societies can show the amateurs’ capabilities to the public and the IARU Member-Societies can enjoy global friendship with other Amateurs worldwide.

For this year’s celebration, theme for World Amateur Radio Day is “Celebrating Amateur Radio’s Contribution to Society”. Beside that, several Twibbonize frame to enliven this day has also been spread.
