People say that we are human are all must be treated in the same way, with no discrimination, no judgment. Everybody deserves the best life to live in. Now, how about the people with Down syndrome and disabilities? In fact, Down Syndrome International said that people with Down syndrome and disabilities around the world do not benefit from full and effective participation and inclusion in society.

Thankfully, in 2012, United Nations (UN) was selected on the 21st day of the 3rd month to signify the uniqueness of Down syndrome and designated 21 March as a global awareness day of the World Down Syndrome. To advocate for the rights of people with Down syndrome, World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) observes every year, and the general principles of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN CRPD) call for “full and effective participation and inclusion in society” for this.

What do we actually need in dealing with the issue of Down syndrome? Not only on International Down Syndrome Day, but everyday people with Down syndrome, families, advocates, professionals, organizations, and indeed anyone around the world should understand how to practice inclusion in society.

On the World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) that we observe every year, we should take the opportunity to connect with the global Down syndrome community to share ideas, experiences, and knowledge, to empower each other, to advocate for equal rights for people with Down syndrome and reach out to key stakeholders to bring about positive change. Yes, let’s build the collective understanding of Inclusion.

Down Syndrome International encourages you to go ahead to observe this day in your own activities, whatever is possible and safe to do. However, you may start it with the meaning of “inclusion”. If a large organized event is quite heavy, social media post could be a small step you can do yo know? Every contribution counts anyway! So, here are Twibbonize frames to the rescue!

Quoted from Down Syndrome International, many people don’t understand how to include people with Down syndrome and disabilities, how full inclusion benefits everyone with or without disabilities, and what is happening around the world to bring about inclusion for all. It shows the lack of agreed understanding of what Inclusion is and what Inclusive systems look like in practice. That’s why…
It happens when the situation is approximately one in 800 live births has a natural chromosomal arrangement and results in the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome (or Trisomy 21) on the baby. There is considerable variation of Down syndrome in the human condition where it usually causes varying degrees of intellectual and physical disability and associated medical issues.
In 2019, the UN Secretary-General even adopted the United Nations Disability Inclusion Strategy (UN DIS) to provides a path towards disability #Inclusion through the three founding pillars of the UN system which has been established in the UN Charter, 1945, such as peace and security, human rights, and development.
Just like the other human born normal, people with Down syndrome have an inherent right to be accepted and included as valued and equal members of the community. We are all agreed for the same and equal opportunities right? All we need is a world where the disabilities able to go to the same places, take part in the same activities, and enjoy the same experiences in life as yours.
Taking a part to celebrate this day, can lead to global conversations, which will empower people around the world to advocate for full #Inclusion in society for people with Down syndrome and disabilities, and indeed for everyone.
Let’s collectively advocate full #Inclusion in society for people with Down syndrome and disabilities. The day is near and it’s exciting, isn’t it? The use of hashtag #InclusionMeans and to add your description of inclusion in sharing your framed photo to your social media friends would be effective for your moves.
